In addition to the age of first sex, the age of a woman giving birth for the first time also affect the risk of cervical cancer. Unfortunately the researchers did not include factor of number of sexual partners and smoking habits.
Chairman of the study, Dr Silvia Franceschi says his research not only focused on adolescent girls only, but the risk of cervical cancer was also seen in women who first had sex at the age of 20 years compared to 25 years.
"In our study, poor women are generally more sexually active sooner so that they are infected with HPV are also vulnerable more quickly. The virus itself takes a long time to develop into cancer," he said.
Although a woman can be infected with HPV at any age, an infection that occurs in very young age is more dangerous because the virus had time enough to develop into cancer. Therefore, the experts reminded the importance of HPV vaccination to be given to pre-adolescent children before they become sexually active.
