The Truth About Beauty

When a beautiful woman walks into a bar, men flock to her and offer to buy her drinks. When an unattractive woman walks into the same bar, chances are, she would have to buy her own drinks.

A beautiful salesperson, man or woman is more likely to win the sale. Between a beautiful job seeker and an unattractive one, all other things being equal, the employer is likely to choose the good looker.

Like it or not, looks do count.

In the past, when women were dependent on men to support them, beauty was everything to a woman. A beautiful woman would have more suitors. She would be able to marry up. To marry a rich man who could take care of all her financial needs and that of her children. Long before commercial cosmetics existed, mothers would instruct their daughters on traditional beauty remedies. simple beauty remedies like using mayonnaise as a moisturizer, or egg white as a firming mask were often used by women in the days before commercial cosmetics.

Then along came women entrepreneurs like Estee Lauder and other women from around the world. They converted traditional beauty recipes which worked for themselves into beauty creams that they sold to other women. Every woman has a right to look her most beautiful and these women were selling others their beauty secrets.

Makeup was used to paint women's faces. In Egypt, the nobles, royalty and the well off would paint their eyes with khol, with crushed beetles and exotic ingredients. In Europe, women would paint their faces with makeup containing toxic mercury for the sake of beauty. In Japan, the geishas would whiten their faces with creams that contain nightingale droppings.

You would think by now, we modern women would have learnt our lesson.

Now, we just inject poison into our faces to paralyze our facial muscles in order to prevent expression lines from deepening as we grow older. Think of those botox injections done every 3 months to erase those wrinkles. Think of the acids we smear on our faces to smoothen them. The dermabrasion procedures done at the dermatologist in order to smoothen our skin.

Women all over the world have always been willing to suffer for the sake of beauty.

Long ago, in China, women in wealthy families would bind their feet. The Chinese back then view tiny feet as beautiful, so little girls have their feet bound, to prevent them from growing big and ugly. Now that long legs are considered beautiful, some women go through a very painful medical procedure that breaks their legs, and stretches their legs by a few millimeters a day through a painful device until they attain the height they want. With their newfound height, these girls can look forward to a wealthy, glamorous future as an international model.

In Europe, centuries ago, wasp waists and curvy bodies were considered beautiful, so corsets were worn to make the waist look much smaller. These were tied so tightly that women faint easily. All for the sake of beauty. Now, corsets are in again. These days, women and men subject themselves to surgery to attain the beauty they desire. Liposuction to remove the excess fat to contour the body. Breast augmentation for bigger breasts that are considered beautiful. Nose jobs, face lifts, the works.

Thankfully, there is also a return to natural beauty remedies.

This time, commercial cosmetics use natural ingredients that women have used for centuries in the home beauty preparations. These are effective and great for the skin.

What we women really should do is to focus on inner beauty, and to keep ourselves healthy. Health is beauty.

8 to 10 hours of sleep every night, fresh food, fresh air, daily exercise, drinking plenty of water every day, soap and water, or cleanser and toner, moisturizer where necessary and sun protection all day long. All that keeps your body healthy and your skin and hair, beautiful. Oh, and learn to age gracefully. After all, aging is a natural process in life.

Controlling Anger , Ways to Manage Anger

If you feel like a volcano is about to explode in your head, get a grip on yourself and realize that there are at least three ways to control your anger: You can express your anger, suppress it or calm yourself down. Whatever you choose, it will help you control your anger.

Expressing your anger - Yes, go ahead, explode! Let go of that burning emotion inside your chest and let it all out. But you have to learn one thing - Yes, you can express your anger but don't let it get out of control and become a destructive force to hurt both the source of your anger and yourself as well.

Anger is man's built-in defense mechanism to ward off danger, to ensure our survival when we are attacked. When we're angry, our heart rate, blood pressure, energy hormones, and adrenalin all go up, making us emotionally and physically stronger to fight off a threat.

But anger, of course, has several levels. You can't equate an enemy who wants to literally stab your heart in the same level of hatred as a person who just broke your heart. Social norms, laws and common sense dictate that we control our anger depending on the intensity of the threats we face. We can't deliver karate blows against every person who simply irritates or annoys us.

But, yes, you can still express your strong emotions to someone who simply pisses you off. Be careful though not to hurt his feelings too much; for instance, don't call him nasty names. Tell the person directly in his face that his behavior is annoying you and making you feel uneasy.

Suppressing your anger - Another way to control your raging emotion is to suppress it, convert it or redirect it. If you feel that it's not yet the time to express your anger, you may decide to freeze it, stop thinking about it, or think of something positive to do instead.

But the danger here is that your bottled up feelings can explode inside you, which may cause health problems like hypertension, depression or high blood pressure. Unreleased anger can also lead to other problems like striking back at your perceived enemy indirectly, or criticizing people even without justification.

Calm yourself - Among the three ways to control anger, calming yourself is without doubt the best option. When you do this, you not only control your outward behavior but also your feelings, thus preventing both physical confrontations -- which will inevitably bring you harm -- and internal conflict, which could harm your health.

Although this is the best option, this is also the hardest to do. But mental discipline and the correct frame of mind, plus moral support from caring friends or relatives, will surely enable you to control your anger in the most effective manner. Source: Michael-Lee

Switch Yourself From Low To High Spirits

Do you still feel tired even after 8 hours of sleep? Does fatigue continue to haunt you after a brief rest? Do you feel like an engine deprived of oil that can make it run smoothly and effortlessly? This feeling occurs too often. It is something that can happen to anybody, including you.

Experts explain this as something that has to do with behavior patterns that we unconsciously develop. There are times in life that we develop a behavior pattern, which we are not aware of until we fall into its bottomless pit. This negative behavior pattern has the tendency to pull down our spirits. It works very similar to the law of gravity - exerting a force that pulls down everything.

The good news is, you can do something about it and elevate your sagging spirits. The change need not be abrupt. Wrong behavior patterns that you have learned can be unlearned by adopting new and correct patterns of behavior.

This is where the challenge lies. Deeply ingrained behaviors are difficult to change, for people always seek the easy route or the comfort of the status quo. It may not be easy, but it can be done. Consider this perspective: Always remember that if you do not do the right behavior, you fuel the habit of doing the wrong behavior.

For example, you hardly have any exercise. The mere thought of going to the gym or taking a walk makes you wince. You snuggle under bedcovers, thinking you can do it tomorrow. You spend the day watching television munching unhealthy food. At the end of the day, you feel awful for having no self-discipline. You promise to exercise the following day. When the next day comes, the cycle stays the same.

Think of it this way: when you miss a workout, it's not like you just stay at the same level you're at. You actually take a few steps back. Every time you miss a workout, you have done something to strengthen the habit of not working out. The more workouts you miss, the stronger the negative behavior grows.

How do you change behavior patterns painlessly? You can start small by allotting fifteen to twenty minutes of your television time for exercise time. Try this for about two weeks. When your body is used to this new schedule, you may gradually increase your exercise time to half an hour. This automatically reduces your television time by a total of thirty minutes.

Say you spend most of the time sitting by the window thinking of fears, anxiety, apprehension, and all sorts of mumbo jumbo thoughts entering your mind. Replace this unproductive habit with a productive behavior. You might want to pick up a book and read it, or take your pet dog for a walk (this gives you the exercise you need at the same time). You can also spend idle time in socializing occasionally, doing occasional volunteer work, or just have plain fun with family or friends.

So you see, there are ways of changing behavior patterns. The technique is to do it gradually. Start small with just a few minutes a day for a week or two, increase the time for the weeks, and so on. You will see an amazing transformation in terms of mental, emotional, and spiritual fulfillment after a couple of weeks. The brooding feeling will be lifted and you will feel energized with the new pattern of behavior.

Again, it should be emphasized that for the new behavior patterns to take root, any improvement must be done gradually, giving it time to sink into your life for you to enjoy its long-term benefits.

Attempting to hasten behavioral change by doing it in large doses or in one gulp might not produce promising effects for improvement. Instead, it might lead to pain and frustration that might not give the same motivation to continue with the change process.

A gradual improvement with long-term effects is definitely worth your time and wait.

What Is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Do you wipe off the doorknobs in your home each time someone touches them? Or do you consistently go to great lengths to avoid walking on sidewalk cracks? Or, worried that you might cause a fire, do you repeatedly check to see that you've turned off the stove? Having feelings that you must perform rituals such as these over and over may indicate that you have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

If you have obsessive-compulsive disorder, your ritual behaviors may literally take over your life. You have distressing, unwanted thoughts or images that don't make sense to you. These thoughts or images keep coming back despite your efforts to resist them. You may strive to hide your condition from friends and co-workers for fear of being labeled crazy.

Doctors once believed that obsessive-compulsive disorder was a rare condition, but it's now known to be more common than other mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. More than 3 million Americans have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder doesn't affect just adults. The disorder often begins during adolescence or early childhood. About one-third to one-half of adult cases begin in childhood. Although there's no cure for obsessive-compulsive disorder, treatments can help you get the disorder under control.

Signs and Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder include:

Obsessions

These are recurrent, persistent, unwanted ideas, thoughts or impulses that you experience involuntarily and that appear to be senseless. They commonly intrude when you're trying to think of or do other things. Common obsessions include:

* Fear of dirt or contamination.
* Concern with order, symmetry and exactness.
* Constantly thinking about certain sounds, images, words or numbers.
* Fear of harming a family member or friend.
* Fear of thinking evil or sinful thoughts.

Compulsions

These are repetitive behaviors that you're driven to perform regularly to combat your obsessions, even though to you -- and to others -- they may seem irrational. You may even make up "rules" to follow that help control the anxiety you feel when having obsessive thoughts. Typical compulsions include:

* Excessive hand washing.
* Repeatedly checking that doors are locked and appliances are turned off.
* Arranging items in a precise order.
* Repeatedly counting to the same number.
* Touching certain objects a precise number of times.

When you perform these rituals, you may feel some relief from anxiety, but not for long. Soon your discomfort returns, and you feel compelled to repeat your behaviors.

If you have an obsessive-compulsive disorder, you probably know that your repetitive thoughts and behaviors are irrational and senseless, but you can't free yourself from them. You may be able to control unwanted behaviors for a while, but your resistance may weaken after months or years of struggle. Eventually, your rituals may take up more and more of your day, making it virtually impossible to lead a normal life.

There's a difference between being a perfectionist and having obsessive-compulsive disorder. Perhaps you get all of your work done a week ahead of schedule, you compete at sports like a pro, and you keep the floors in your house so clean you could eat off them. That doesn't mean you have obsessive-compulsive disorder. Instead, you may belong to a large group of people who are sometimes called compulsive. That just means you hold yourself to a very high standard of performance in all that you do. This behavior contributes to building your self-esteem and success. These are not the behaviors seen in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Behaviors associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder interfere with everyday functioning.

Causes

Doctors don't know the exact cause of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Some researchers theorize that its cause is biological, while others feel the disorder stems from learned behavior. Still others believe the cause of the disorder may be both biological and environmental factors. An insufficient level of serotonin, one of your brain's chemical messengers, may contribute to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Imaging studies that use positron emission tomography (PET) scans to compare the brains of people who have obsessive-compulsive disorder with the brains of those who don't, show differences in brain-activity patterns. In addition, people with obsessive-compulsive disorder who take medications that enhance the action of serotonin often show great improvement.

Risk Factors

Your risk of developing an obsessive-compulsive disorder is slightly higher if your parents or other family members have obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, researchers haven't identified any genes responsible for obsessive-compulsive disorder. You may also have a biological predisposition to react strongly to stress. This reaction may, for some reason, trigger the intrusive thoughts, rituals and emotional distress characteristic of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Shame and embarrassment may keep you from seeking treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder. But even if your rituals are deeply ingrained, treatments can help. If you suspect you have obsessive-compulsive disorder, see your doctor or a mental health professional.

Effective Stress Relief for Men

Men deal with more stress than ever these days. Workdays are harder than ever and the need to be successful is stronger. However, with this need for success, also comes the need for major stress relief. Most men; especially those with families have to face so much stress that they often become angry and resentful if the stress is not properly handled. The problem is wondering where you can turn to for help in dealing with stress. I am telling you that there are multiple places that you can turn for stress relief advice.

When it comes to men's health advice it used to be that men turned to their fathers. Of course, these days, that is often not going to be very helpful. So much is being written about women's health today that it only makes sense for there to be much information on men's health as well. Men needed a place to turn top for advice and general information about their health and the forums for this are increasing every day.

Increasingly, advice for men is furnished through men's magazines such as Men's Health and Men's Journal. Even Playboy magazine has spent decades dishing out advice for men on everything from love and sex to cars and computers. Their writers and editors are often connoisseurs with expertise in wine, cinema, literature, music, humor, and other tools of the trade. Men's health issues are addressed in articles just about everywhere including online forums as well.

As it turns out, the Internet is the leading source of advice for men, because it's often free. Free advice, as you might suspect, does not always equate with good advice, however, so men must in fact be discriminating in where they turn. If there's one problem that soliciting advice over the Internet poses, it's the difficulty of verifying the information sources. Consequently, the value of established men's portals, many of which have attracted writers and editors from leading magazines, has skyrocketed in the past few years.

Sometimes, it's women who indeed have the best advice for men, as it is they whom the men have spent so much time, energy, and money pursuing. Ironically, it's women and women's magazines that often have the best advice to give on stress relief, of all things, prostate advice and even penile dysfunctions. When it comes to men's health issues, more and more advice is posted everyday. Perhaps the best forum for this online is for men visit webmd. com.

Method To Gain Control Over Your Stress

3

Possibly the most misunderstood part of stress management is your role in it.
Those who respond to life with negativity or anxiety as most likely to deal with the physical affects of anger, guilt, nervousness, frustration and fear.

These emotions can cause hypertension and high blood pressure, which can lead to heart attack or stroke. Other complications include ulcers, arthritis, asthma, high cholesterol and kidney disease.

People who tend to focus on themselves as the controller of their fate - in fact 'self-motivated' - are more likely to feel a sense of control when stressors affect them. Instead of blaming something or someone else they have the motivation to deal with a problem and look for a reasonable solution.

This may have to do with how you organize the images in your brain. Basically your brain records all your senses all the time. Since your vision is important imagery is a very important part of how your brain thinks.

So the brain thinks in images. Our memories are collections of images. The interesting thing is, we actually have the power to control or change those images. By changing our images we can change/control our states.

Think of a time when you felt some stress. Make this memory as vivid as you can. If you can imagine a time when you were stressed and feel those feelings now. You are 'hallucinating' as that situation exists in the past, not now. You have to recreate or 'hallucinate' the conditions to feel stressed.

Hallucination is normal. We do it all the time. When you think of that situation with an ex that happened 5 years ago and get angry or recall or memory that makes you all mushy. You are vividly recreating an event that has ceased to exist. In other words you are hallucinating in a controlled manner.

Ask yourself, "How can I use this knowledge about hallucination for stress management?"

Think of a time when you felt challenged but confident that you will succeed. Pick even a small event and hallucinate in vividly. Feel the feelings you felt then, now.

Here's the fun part. Go back to the time you felt stressed and notice what details your mind is focused on. Particularly what you saw, heard, felt etc. in detail. Do the same for the time you felt good and notice how these hallucinations are different from each other.

Maybe in the stress hallucination you feel pressure around you (with the world closing in) while when feeling confident you don't. Maybe you say negative thoughts to yourself while in stress and when not, you think of nice things.

Pay careful attention to these next words.

If you take the components of the stressful hallucination (size, feelings sounds etc.) and switch it with the more positive one you will feel better automatically.

This has to do with how your brain organizes your thoughts. Happy thoughts are kept in one area and sad thoughts in another. If you use the happy thoughts way of perceiving things, then that's how you will feel.

It can take you up to 5 minutes to get the feel for the process. Once you know how to change your stressful hallucinations to positive ones you can do it anytime anywhere.

The ability to choose our thoughts, to think what we want, is what gives us the power to determine our attitude and perspective when approaching a problem.

If we allow stress, anger and frustration to consume us, it can be like a runaway train gathering steam and threatening to derail. All you got to do is stop fueling the fire and the train will slow down.
